AB 1705 is a California law that ensures students are placed directly into college-level English and math/quantitative reasoning courses that meet the requirements for their intended certificate, associate degree, or transfer goals. The information below provides an overview of your options to meet these requirements at COD.
All students will begin in college-level English. At COD, there are two options, both covering the same content with the same title, but ENGL C1000E offers additional support for students who want extra help.
ENGL C1000 Academic Reading and Writing (4 units)
ENGL C1000E Academic Reading and Writing (5 units)
Recommended for students who could benefit from extra support.
Below are the college level math courses offered at COD. Some majors require a specific math course. Please speak with a Counselor to determine the best math course for your intended goal and major.
Students in STEM majors (Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, etc.) are placed into math based on the criteria below. Please have your high school transcripts available when you meet with a counselor to discuss placement and receive any necessary waivers.

If you are pursuing a STEM major, you will start in MATH 001A. Please see a Counselor to request a prerequisite waiver.
It depends on your score and the university you would like to transfer to. Consult with a counselor to determine the best placement for you.
Contact the Counseling Office to speak with a counselor and have your high school transcripts on hand. Once we confirm your eligibility for MATH 001A, we’ll submit a prerequisite waiver to allow you to register.
No, support courses are optional but recommended for students who would like extra help. Courses are non-credit, no cost and help you pass your class!
No, ENG 001A is now ENGL C1000. The courses are equivalent and satisfy the same requirement. The number and title change happened as part of the statewide Common Course Numbering project.
Students who earn a 3 or higher on the AP English Language & Composition or the AP English Literature & Composition exam will satisfy the English Communication general education requirement. Please see a Counselor to determine how this score will count towards your major and/or transfer goal.
